What’s Happening This Week in Our Cancer Community?

May 4th –10th

 Municipality of Anchorage Area

Monday, May 4th: “Young Cancer Sucks But At Least I Met You”. This group is focused on young adults with cancer diagnosed in their 20s and 30s, we welcome anyone with open arms at any age that is young at heart.  Our youngest member is 8 years old and our oldest member is 55 years old.  I’ve heard a number of people that are in their early 40s that aren’t sure if they are welcome.  They are!  We like to say that we don’t check IDs at the door. 7pm – 9pm at Far North Yarn Company.

Tuesday, May 5th: US Too Monthly Meeting. Join Anchorage’s prostate and testicular support group in sharing, asking questions or just listening. It’s a great time to get to know one another and spend some time with those that probably know a thing or two about what you are going through. 6pm-7:30pm. Tuesday, May 5th: American Cancer Society Support Group. Weekly support group for cancer patients, survivors, family and caregivers. Every Tuesday, 7-8:30pm at Wells Fargo Bank. 301 W. Northern Lights, second floor conference room. 258-1937.

Wednesday, May 6th: US Too Guys Coffee and Shmoozing. Join Anchorage’s prostate and testicular support group in sharing, asking questions or just listening. It’s a great time to get to know one another and spend some time with those that probably know a thing or two about what you are going through. Every Tuesday, 10am. At Cafe Del Mundo (341 E Benson). Wednesday, May 6th: What’s the Stitch? A come-as-you-are, when-you-are-able support group for anyone touched by that “club” no one asks to join: cancer. Come learn a new skill, share your expertise, chat about what ails you, and make new friends! Every Wednesday, 2-4pm. Alaska Regional Hospital Cancer Center, Building C, Suite 414. Thursday, May 7th: Alaska Native Medical Center Cancer Support Group. 1st & 3rd Thursday for Native Alaskan’s only at ANMC from 2-3pm. Call 729-1179 to find out location.

Friday, May 8th: Breast Cancer Focus Alaska Luncheon. Tickets are $40 but survivors can get a free ticket.  It’s a fundraiser and so there is an awesome silent auction and lots of different fun events from 11 am – 1:30 pmhttp://breastcancerfocus.org/luncheon/

Saturday, May 9th: Yoga Therapy. For cancer caregivers, patients and survivors. Compassionate complementary care for cancer patients and caregivers. Please discuss referral with your doctors, no signed referral is necessary. A release of information between Yoga for Mental Health and your healthcare team may be requested. Billable to insurance for qualified participants. Friday, May 8thHealing Yoga on Fridays: A gentle Immune-Restorative Class complimented with restful poses and Yogic breathing for relaxation. Meet with fellow prostate cancer survivors to go over any new information/resources that have been encountered, talk about how to help anyone who has contacted the Kenai Peninsula Prostate Cancer Support Group and just have fellowship and support. Wednesday, May 6th: Interior Alaska Cancer Support Group. This group concentrates on general support and assistance in dealing with specific cancers. Tuesday, April 28th: The Tool Box. A cancer support group for individuals newly diagnosed with any type and stage of cancer. Meets the last Tuesday of each month in the Cancer Center at Alaska Regional Hospital. Building C, suite 414. 11am-12pm. For more information, please contact the Cancer Center at 264-1431.

Tuesday, April 28th: Planning Ahead. Learn how to complete advance directives, power of attorney, comfort one, and other important documents. You will explore the above documents and discuss their importance. In addition you will discuss how to be PREPARED for the “unexpected”. Tuesday, April 28th: Look Good, Feel Better. Look Good, Feel Better teaches women how to cope with the appearance related side-effects of treatment. Taught by professional cosmetologists, this program is open to all women undergoing cancer treatment, and it’s free. 2pm-4pm at Alaska Native Medical Center, Conference room 2.
